      Little Rock Water Quality: Then & Now

       

      Situated along the Arkansas River, Little Rock thrives as a major cultural, economic, and transportation center of the South. In the early 1800s, wells and springs first supplied water to residents of Little Rock and Central Arkansas. Little Rock water supplies expanded thanks to a federal grant, leading to the foundation of the Arkansas Water Works Company in 1936. Before the construction of the Murray Lock and Dam, Little Rock relied on the Arkansas River for its water supply. It was in 2000 that the University of Arkansas at Little Rock published “Water for Our Future: Overcoming Regional Paralysis,” which marked the beginning of a new era of inter-local cooperation for Little Rock and North Little Rock as a metropolitan service.

      Two raw water supplies, Lake Winona and Lake Maumelle, form the core of Central Arkansas Water’s system today. Located in central Arkansas, Lake Maumelle covers 8,900 acres. The man-made lake attracts many boaters and fishermen, but also plays a pivotal role in supplying water to its surrounding residents. Pipelines in Little Rock extend over 2,750 miles. Boosted pumping stations are also present at 22 sites, and remote storage facilities are available at 23 spots. While Little Rock water quality is generally good, chlorine, lead, nitrates, and bacteria can contaminate water. Other potential contaminants include pharmaceuticals, industrial chemicals, and agricultural runoff. The Arkansas Department of Health regularly tests the city’s tap water for various contaminants and publishes annual water quality reports.
