      Des Moines Water Quality: Then & Now

       

      The modern-day city of Des Moines began as a military fort, built where the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers merge. The fort fell out of use, but settlers began occupying the abandoned property and the surrounding areas because of the easy access to fresh surface water sources. 

      The Des Moines Water Company was established in 1871 to monitor Des Moines water quality issues. In the early 1900s, a large number of typhoid deaths caused the city to conduct a study of the quality of water from the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers. It was found that the water contained pollution from sewage, human waste, septic tanks, and commercial shops.

      Des Moines tap water today is safe to drink and cook with. The residents of Des Moines get their drinking water primarily from the Raccoon and Des Moines Rivers. Drinking water is also sourced from two other bodies of surface water—Crystal Lake and the Maffitt Reservoir. Des Moines water quality is overseen by the Des Moines Water Works, which operates three water treatment plants in central Iowa. 

      All three plants use a multi-barrier approach for treating drinking water that includes source water monitoring, softening, filtration, and disinfection to ensure that the Des Moines water quality is up to standards. Water is distributed to homes and businesses in Des Moines through a system of 1,400 miles of underground pipes and pumping stations. 

      Des Moines sources most of its water from surface water, which is highly susceptible to contamination or pollution in the local watersheds. Sources of contaminants that affect Des Moines water quality include agricultural activity, septic tank leaching, discharge from factories, and waste from metal drilling.
