International World Water Day is held every year on March 22 to bring attention on the importance of freshwater and to advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. During this year’s World Water Day, UNICEF released the statistic that about 750 million people around the world lack access to safe water, or 1 in 9 people worldwide.

“Some 2.3 billion people have gained access to improved sources of drinking water since 1990,” said Sanjay Wijesekera, head of UNICEF’s global Water, Sanitation and Hygiene programs. “But there is more to do. Water is the very essence of life and yet three quarters of a billion people, mostly the poor and marginalized still today are deprived of this most basic human right.”
