What do you think is most important to you? Would you rather be drinking clean water or breathing clean air? Imagine if you had to be concerned about the world’s most precious resource, your drinking water, is actually harming your health. A new public study conducted in May found that Americans are starting to realize just how important clean water is to them and how significant steps need to be made in order to ensure clean drinking water in America.

Nationwide Issue

One of the most prominent things that this study found is that clean drinking water is more important than clean air to Americans. The study included the opinions of the nation’s general population as well as experts in the field and came to the conclusion that 87% of Americans believe water is the most important natural resource compared to clean air at 81%. According to the study, two out of three Americans believe their community is vulnerable to a water crisis. With deeper investigation, this does not seem to be that surprising.  In 2016, Reuters released a report that that there were nearly 3,000 other locales in the United States where the lead contamination in drinking water was at least double the rates found in Flint’s drinking water.

Sounds a little unsettling doesn’t it? So unsettling that even corporations are getting involved to help support the environmental efforts assuring safe drinking water for the public. It is going to take a lot of effort to upgrade our crumbling water infrastructure that would cost about $1 Trillion for our nation.

Aging Water Infrastructure

In comparison to other countries you are probably thinking America’s water supply cannot be that bad. You aren’t wrong! America has one of the safest water supplies in the world. In 2006, the EPA stated that almost 90% of the nation’s community water systems were in compliance with their standards. However, a report from the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) stated that nearly 77 million Americans live in places where the water systems were in some violation of safety regulations. The interesting thing the study found was that Americans support investment into the water infrastructure to address many of these water-related issues. Specifically, 52% of Americans believe it is necessary to prioritize more efficient water collection and purification methods.
