You’re committed to providing the safest working environment possible to your employees. For this reason, you offer purified bottled water so they can stay hydrated throughout the workday. After all, bottled water is safer than tap water, right?

This is what the majority of people think, but many studies are pointing toward the fact that bottled water isn’t always as safe as tap water. According to National Geographic, a four-year study conducted by the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) revealed that while most bottled water is safe to drink, approximately 22 percent of the water tested had contaminant levels that exceeded strict state health limits. Another study discovered that bottled water that had been stored for 10 weeks contained hormone-disrupting phthalates that had leached into the water from the plastic.

Discovery News reports scientists in Germany found that these hormone-disrupting chemicals have the potential to interfere with estrogen and other reproductive hormones.

“What we found was really surprising to us,” Goethe University ecotoxicologist Martin Wagner told the publication. “If you drink water from plastic bottles, you have a high probability of drinking estrogenic compounds.”

The water in the plastic bottles tested in Wagner’s study was from natural German springs. To insure the chemicals were not coming from the water, the bottles were emptied and replaced with a pure snail medium and a species of snail that is especially sensitive to estrogenic compounds. After eight weeks, the female snails in the plastic bottles had more than double the amount of embryos in their bodies than snails that were placed in a control group of glass bottles.

“This is coming at a good time because the use of bottles for consuming water is getting very bad press now because of its carbon footprint,” Wagner explained. “It’s just another nail in the coffin of bottled water, the way I see it.”

Don’t put your employees’ health at risk by providing plastic water bottles at work. Instead, use Quench bottleless water coolers for purified, healthy hydration in the workplace.
